Abstract

People perceive the sky based on their knowledge, culture, and community. However, discourse in schools is insufficient due to the different orientation of knowledge and resources in the basic education system of the Philippines. This study aims to document the state of ethnoastronomy teaching in secondary education and the acceptance of teachers towards initiating a Filipino-oriented education. This was accomplished through surveys conducted among science teachers, interviews and consultations with experts in astronomy, ethnoastronomy, and science education, and an analysis of local and international studies and literature on the philosophy of education and Filipino ethnoastronomy. The study revealed a divergence from the educational philosophy in science teaching, an emphasis on astronomy, and responses to critiques of neocolonial tendencies. It also highlighted the scarcity of references on ethnoastronomy and the limited knowledge of teachers in this area. The research produced can serve as a reference for teaching, aimed at further developing Filipino-oriented astronomy.
