Title: Queer Longings at the Makeshift Barber Shop
Abstract: This literary piece mirrors the conflict between tradition and self-expression. It draws on childhood memories of mandatory haircuts in rural Camarines Sur and how it impacts the life of a young gay man growing up. The repetitive act of getting haircuts symbolizes societal and familial pressures that contradict the author’s longing for individuality. The author’s sense of self, as influenced by imaginative play and romantic literature, is constantly challenged. The story examines the struggle between adhering to cultural expectations and desiring personal liberty. It ends with an emphasis on the enduring strength of the human spirit.
